Cambodian bronzes at the Sackler Gallery, DC

Maitreya is the bodhisattva (future Buddha) who may be born on Earth as soon as a few thousand years from now (just around the courner people!) The eight-armed form appears to be a Cambodian invention, but you never know... The above depiction was cast in a period (early 10th century) during which hardly any Buddhist images were commissioned and from which few bronzes survive. One of several extraordinary bronzes that were on display during a recent visit I paid to the Sackler Gallery, Washington.

I adore the Sackler Gallery and the Freer Gallery which are normally well paired on any tour of the Smithsonian series of galleries. When I was last there a few years ago, I saw an exhibit of the private collection of the Maharajah of Jodhpur which was on display for the first time in its history in the West. Many may not recall but His Highness was once a High Commissioner from India to Trinidad and Tobago and I well remember him being over 6 feet tall walking side by side with his diminutive wife, the Maharanee. It goes without saying that the Maharajah was perhaps the most cultured diplomat ever posted here from India.
I would love to be able to see this collection of Bronzes if my travels take me to Washington. Thanks for sharing Andre
